The 14th Annual JOE FM Bowl for Children at Ed's Rec Room in West Edmonton Mall last night was a great success. With 28 lanes full of enthusiastic participants and local celebrities heading up teams, it is no wonder this event is so popular and successful for the Children's Ability Fund - one of the longest running charities in Northern Alberta! For over 60 years, the Children's Ability Fund has raised funds to purchase specialized equipment for people with disabilities.
This event is so fantastic because of the ongoing support of our sponsors, celebrity team captains, and the participants who go above and beyond to raise pledges for the charity.
The following people won some great prizes for raising pledges for the charity:
5th place: $100 Gift Certificate for Ruth's Chris Steak House (donated by JOE FM) - Andre
4th place: Family Choice Pass for West Edmonton Mall - Sydnee from billy's Stars
3rd place: Bowling party for 20 at Ed's Rec Room - Richard from billy's Stars
2nd place: Diamond Ring donated by Ben Moss Jewellers - Cathy
And first place, raising $ 1,155 in pledges was Robin who won a 42" LG LCD TV donated by Double Diamond Electronics.

The Children's Ability Fund would like to thank all our supporters and our major sponsors: 92.5 JOE FM, Ed's Rec Room, West Edmonton Mall, Double Diamond Electronics and Ben Moss Jewellers!
We would also like to thank the support of all the local celebrities that showed off their bowling skills and headed up our teams: Jolan Wong & Leaha Hickman (National Sitting Volleyball Players), City Councillor Kerry Diotte, Radio-Canada Sportcaser Patrick Henri, Jules Soetaert (Professional Bowler), #911 Trauminatrix from the St. Albert Heavenly Rollers, Global's Quinn Ohler, Breakfast TV's Ryan Jespersen, APTN National News Journalist Keith Laboucan, Banshee BarBrawler from the Oil City Derby Girls, Gord Hinse & Calvin McCarty (Edmonton Eskimos), Corporal Kevin Harling & Andy Social from CFB Edmonton, the NRG Girls Dance Team, and the Edmonton Energy Basketball team: Lee Scruggs, Andrew Parker, Curtis Nash, William Broadus, Daniel Boticki, Kenna Payton, Steve Sir, Daniel Ferguson, BJ Walker, Atif Farhat, and 92.5 JOE FM Announcers Gary James, J'Lyn Nye, Shannon Fox, Derek Allen & Rhubarb Jones.

Children's Ability Fund Stars are ordinary people who choose to do something extraordinary.
It's easy to be a Children's Ability Fund Shining Star and make things a little brighter for someone with a disability.
If you have a great idea for a fundraising project in your community or at the office - let us know. We'll help publicize the event and provide support.
Be creative and have fun. How about a neighborhood BBQ, garage sale or bake sale, a penny carnival at the school, or an inter-office softball challenge or golf tournament? It's a great way to get a group of people together, have a lot of fun and raise a little money to assist someone in need.
Some of the more recent Shining Star projects include:
For several years, the staff of the neonatology departments at the
Each year we feel so fortunate to have been a part of such an incredible event. It is inspiring to be in a room filled with so many individuals passionate about their work in the medical field, all with hearts and minds set on helping others.
Thank you to the Children's Ability Fund team for their hard work and dedication to answering (mostly correctly!) the many challenging questions, and to Dr Juzer Tyebkhan and his wonderful staff for another afternoon of knowledge, laughter, and the first place donation for 2011 too!
Vinay Aggarwal and his team from the Second Cup (Calgary Trail) have been proud supporters of the Children's Ability Fund for many years. He is dedicated to his family, a committed community partner and an active business man. Vinay owns two local Second Cups.(All of the Second Cups are independently owned and uniquely Canadian.)
Vinay began to support the Children's Ability Fund at our annual JOE FM Bowl for Children at Gateway Entertainment Center. He then became a "shining star" and sold stars to his customers to help raise funds for our charity and raise awareness of the Bowl for Children event. Last year he added the "shining star" program during his busiest time of year - Christmas. He is also a proud sponsor of our annual Tee Fore Two Golf Tournament. His prizing, coffee, breakfast, and cookies are a welcome addition to this event.
Although the monetary and in-kind gifts are commendable, it's the consistency of his gift and his genuine kind nature that makes him a true "superstar". His support of our charity and what we do is unwavering. We know we can depend on him if we need a gift, to fundraise for a campaign, to use his venue, or just simply grab a great cup of coffee.
Thank- you Vinay for your continued support !
Children's Ability Fund stars really shine! Together we can enhance the independence of people with disabilities throughout northern Alberta.

Although it was a blustery weekend,,,over 30,000 people attented the Silver Skate Festival in February 2011 enjoying a host of free, fun filled, family activities including The Cessco Snow Garden, sleigh rides, sledge hockey (featuring the Paralympic Sports Association), snow shoe and skate trials, a Heritage Village, and a raft of entertaiment. And for the more adventuresome there were the 1k, 10k & 25K skate marathons and the ever popular Edmonton Winter Triathlon.
The Silver Skate Festival is rooted in the Dutch tradition of a love of the outdoors and the pleasure of experiencing the cultural and aesthetic beauty of winter. A unique blend of arts, sports, culture and recreational programming is combined in a way that reflects Edmonton's winter climate, geography and community. Silver Skate is an event inclusive of all ages and lifestyles. We invite all walks of life to enjoy winter in the beautiful setting of the River Valley in picturesque Hawrelak Park and best of all, "IT'S FREE"!
The Children's Ability Fund is proud to be the charity of choice for the Silver Skate Festival. Last year the Festival raised donations through the sales of commemorative "lights" to help brighten the winter night. In addition there were a limited quantity of the the "TOTI" prints of the Silver Skate Festive for sale.
For more information check out the website @ www.silverskatefestival.org.
Capital CIty Savings (now Servus) commissioned the painting by TOTI to commemorate the Silver Skate Festival and benefit the Children's Ability Fund. High quality prints and cards were created from the art and all proceeds from the sale of these prints go to the charity to help fund programs.
Toti is one of Canada's most loved artists. Toti's trademark is her ability to capture the subtle rhythm of family life, and the pleasure of city living, indoors and outdoors recording with a stroke of her brush the people and places of Edmonton.

Walmart and the Children's Ability Fund team up for people with disabilities.
The 3rd annual Walmart Media Wheelchair Challenge and Fundraiser on November 4th was another great success!
Media personalities accepted the challenge and experienced what it might be like and how difficult it is to get around if you have a disability – especially without appropriate equipment. They were given a basic manual wheelchair, shopping basket, and shopping list then asked to retrieve the items on the list as quickly as possible. Competitors were Stephanie Barsby from CBC, Jacqueline Greenly from CISN, Adam Cook and Carly Agro from CTV, Shane Jones from Global News, Gary James from JOE FM, Katarina representing Walmart, and Dean as a challenge from our board chairperson. Competing alongside and completing the same task were friends of the Children's Ability Fund using their specialized equipment - Linnie and Michael.
It was a fun-filled morning with tough competition! Our media personalities took the challenge very seriously (we think Shane Jones scoped out the store in the days prior), and everyone did their best (although Gary had a hard time sticking to the list). Shane’s past experience at the event served him well, earning him another first place, and Stephanie Barsby had her best finish yet, coming in second! Rounding out the top three was Walmart employee & Children's Ability Fund friend, Michael. Our first year competitors realized just how difficult it was and all promised to come back next year.
The Walmart South Common store has been extremely supportive of the Children's Ability Fund. Their charity fund asked other Walmart stores to help with donations and exceeded their fundraising goal, presenting the Children's Ability Fund with a cheque for $10,500 at the event! In addition their sales staff sold stars at the entrances to the store for part of the day.
We would like to thank everyone at Walmart - managers, charity committee, and associates; the media; and Children's Ability Fund friends for supporting this event.

After 17 very successful years it was time to retire the event. Over the past 17 years the participants in this event have eaten over 50,000 chicken wings and raised over $150,000 all for the Children's Ability Fund.
King Ken was the wing bone of this event. In 2007 he decided it would be his last year and vowed to top the $60,000 mark in pledges to help celebrate our 60th anniversary - as task he did well. Over the 11 years he participated Ken reigned as King of the Wings - raising a total of $69,238 and personally eating 884 hot chicken wings .
We salute you King Ken and thank-you for your outstanding contributions over the years.
A really big thank-you to all of the other participants who came and ate hot chicken wings all for a great cause - especially those teams who came back year after year after year - setting the bar higher each time.
