AAFRE 2012 Roll of Honour - Neonatrix Services

AAFRE webDr. Aziz accepting on behalf of Neonatrix Services

Since 2002, the Neonatologists of Neonatrix Services Inc. (Alberta Health Services- Royal Alexandra & Stollery Children's Hospital) have organized and participated in Synapse! The game-show based event involves participation by all interdisciplinary staff of the NICUs (Neonatologists, Fellows, Nurse Practitioners, RNs, Administration), as well as specialists from other hospital departments (Perinatology, Pharmacy, Respiratory, etc.). Participating teams compete against each other by answering medical and non-medical related questions to gain points. Teams are eliminated throughout, with the winning team being the last team standing.

Each year, eight local charities (all which support pregnant mothers, babies, and/or children) are invited and assigned to a team of medical professionals to vie for the winning place. The afternoon event is filled with good-hearted competition, lots of laughter, a light lunch, significant brain work, and a lot of fun!

Regardless of how early a team is eliminated, every charity leaves with a donation. The Children's Ability Fund was first invited to be a part of the event in 2004 and since then we have received donations totalling $5250.00. Other beneficiaries of this event have been Catholic Social Services (First Steps Program), TERRA, Edmonton School Lunch Program, Youth Emergency Shelter of Edmonton, ABC Head Start, Centre for Family Literacy (Books for Babies), and Norwood Child and Family Resource Centre.

It is inspiring to be in a room filled with so many individuals passionate about their work in the medical field, all with hearts and minds set on helping others. Dr. Tyebkhan and his team put a significant amount of time and effort into preparations for Synapse!, making sure that there are questions designed to test the staff's knowledge of medical procedures, equipment, terminology, and practical uses, as well as current events, history, popular music, and much more!

Dr. Tyebkhan and Neonatrix Services Inc. have combined charitable giving with a fun-filled afternoon that the Children's Ability Fund is honoured to be a part of.

Keyboards for Kids gets major funding boost from Telus to create school program!

The Children's Ability Fund is pleased to announce our new partnership with the Telus Community Board in support of Keyboards for Kids – the School Project.

The Children's Ability Fund's Keyboards for Kids program was introduced in 2000 to provide funding for a word-processing keyboard called AlphaSmart Neos for children with unique learning needs. The AlphaSmart is a device that enables a student to work on the go, but it is strictly for word processing - it functions like a simple digital typewriter. It saves every keystroke to the machine's RAM. AlphaSmarts can transfer data either by a special program that communicates with the AlphaSmart or by the simpler method of transmitting the keystrokes of the written text as if it were the computer's keyboard. This device allows students to produce more work with less energy expenditure, giving a greater sense of accomplishment and more enthusiasm for writing and learning.

Although the original focus of this program was on individuals, we realized that this simple piece of equipment could be beneficial to schools and be a valuable tool to several special needs students year after year.  In addition, working through the schools will raise awareness of the tools that are available to children with disabilities both at home and at school.

The Telus Community Board has donated enough money to purchase over 70 AlphaSmarts to distribute to school districts (elementary schools) in the Edmonton Capital Region.  "At TELUS, we are committed to give where we live.  The TELUS Edmonton Community Board is proud to support the Children's Ability Fund and the Keyboards for Kids project that will provide important learning tools for Edmonton children with a disability. Together we can help make the future friendly for these children." Says Dr. Bob Westbury, Chair of the TELUS Edmonton Community Board.

“We are pleased with the positive response to this project as well as the dedication shown by educators to support the learning needs of children with disabilities at school,”  says Carol Russ, Executive Director of the Children’s Ability Fund. “This simple, yet effective piece of equipment will enable special needs students keep up with their peers while providing more confidence and pride in the work they produce- something students of all abilities should have the opportunity to experience. The Children's Ability Fund is pleased to be able to implement this project with help from TELUS this year on such a grand scale."

The Children's Ability Fund was very proud to nominate Double Diamond Electonics for the 2010 AFFRE Role of Honour Awards

For over 10 years, John has donated the grand prize to both the Children's Ability Fund's Wing Ding and Bowl for Children events.  We estimate that his donations have amounted to over $15,000!   However, that $15,000 in prizes gave our participants incentive to raise pledges and for the charity has raised well over $160,000 with his help!

The Children's Ability Fund is grateful to John and his staff for their consistent support of our organization. We truly appreciate the ease in which he makes his donations – we know when we call to request support from John it is just like speaking with an old friend.

AAFRE 2008 Roll of Honour Awards - Jack Broadfoot

Jack Broadfoot and Dynateam Realty have been the title sponsors of the "Tee Fore Two" Charity Golf Tournament for the Children's Ability Fund.

Jack is a personable, dedicated, professional member of the Edmonton real estate scene.

A quote from his website says...If you are looking to buy or sell a home, the combination of innovative marketing strategies and the Internet can ensure a swift process. My knowledge of the local market is unparalleled.  No matter what your goals, I have the knowledge, experience and energetic approach to make your move a success.

Dynateam Realty reflects the same values .....  To serve the Edmonton and surrounding areas with the utmost in knowledge, integrity & honesty...

Jack is as passionate about his commitment to our charity as he is about his profession. He came to the inaugural "no frills" tournament in 2002 as a participant and believed so strongly in the charity and the work the Children's Ability Fund does that he came back the second year, and in the third year he joined the committee and agreed to be the title sponsor. Jack has been an integral part of the event since; not only through his corporate sponsorship but he also brings a whole bevy of golfers to join in the activities for the day.

Jack is every committee's dream; he donates his time, his energy, his expertise, his contacts and his resources to help make the event a success. Over the past eight years, more than $100,000 has been raised through the "Tee Fore Two" event.

We are privileged to have Jack as part of our "team" and we are proud to have nominated him for the 2008 AFFRE Roll of Honour Award
