November was a busy month for the Children’s Ability Fund.

On November 1st we were invited, as guests of honour, to the official launch of the sledge hockey season at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton. They were debuting the $10,500 of sledge hockey equipment that was purchased with our donation to the Personnel Support Program in Edmonton. Sledge hockey is similar to stand up hockey in rules and regulations, however the physicality is quite different. It is a very challenging game with the predominant muscle use in the upper body and core. Players are seated in bucket seats with their legs extended to the front and two blades beneath them on the bucket. They propel themselves using two short hockey sticks with blades, similar to regular hockey sticks, on one end and picks (used to dig into the ice) on the other.

The Children’s Ability Fund was also given the opportunity to send some players out on the ice and try the sport alongside the soldiers. Thankfully they took it relatively easy on us and we came away with just a few bruises and sore muscles, but enjoyed the experience immensely. How fortunate we are to see and try our donation dollars at work!

November 9th, was Northlands’ Rodeo Magic. As part of Canadian Finals Rodeo, it is an opportunity for kids with disabilities to be “Rodeo Stars” for a day. This day promises “smiles all around, and magic in the air” and it never fails! Once again our bean bag toss game was a hit with the kids, many coming back to play again and again. Each child is paired with a CFR competitor or Rodeo Queen to guide them through the activities. For many of these kids it is their first, and perhaps only, opportunity to ride a horse, rope a (haybale) bull, ride a (barrel) bronc, and just be in the dirt on the floor of the arena at Northlands! Bull Jangles, the CFR mascot, made an appearance and was kind enough to pose with our board chairperson. We all went away with a bit more magic in our hearts as well.
