Walmart Media Wheelchair Challenge & Fundraiser

Walmart and the Children's Ability Fund team up for people with disabilities.

The 3rd annual Walmart Media Wheelchair Challenge and Fundraiser on November 4th was another great success!

Media personalities accepted the challenge and experienced what it might be like and how difficult it is to get around if you have a disability – especially without appropriate equipment. They were given a basic manual wheelchair, shopping basket, and shopping list then asked to retrieve the items on the list as quickly as possible. Competitors were Stephanie Barsby from CBC, Jacqueline Greenly from CISN, Adam Cook and Carly Agro from CTV, Shane Jones from Global News, Gary James from JOE FM, Katarina representing Walmart, and Dean as a challenge from our board chairperson. Competing alongside and completing the same task were friends of the Children's Ability Fund using their specialized equipment - Linnie and Michael.

It was a fun-filled morning with tough competition! Our media personalities took the challenge very seriously (we think Shane Jones scoped out the store in the days prior), and everyone did their best (although Gary had a hard time sticking to the list). Shane’s past experience at the event served him well, earning him another first place, and Stephanie Barsby had her best finish yet, coming in second! Rounding out the top three was Walmart employee & Children's Ability Fund friend, Michael. Our first year competitors realized just how difficult it was and all promised to come back next year.

The Walmart South Common store has been extremely supportive of the Children's Ability Fund. Their charity fund asked other Walmart stores to help with donations and exceeded their fundraising goal, presenting the Children's Ability Fund with a cheque for $10,500 at the event! In addition their sales staff sold stars at the entrances to the store for part of the day.

We would like to thank everyone at Walmart - managers, charity committee, and associates; the media; and Children's Ability Fund friends for supporting this event.
